Special edition: Advancing cultural-historical research: from experimental-genetic method to genetic research methodology

with Professor Nikolai Veresov

Session focus

This special edition focuses entirely on Nikolai Veresov’s work. He will discuss the movement from the experimental-genetic method to genetic research methodology, drawing on an intellectual project he began more than fifteen years ago.

The provisional title is “Advancing cultural-historical research: from experimental-genetic method to genetic research methodology.” The planned primary reading is his forthcoming opening chapter in Cultural-historical research methodology across ages and cultures, a book he is developing with his research group. The chapter presents the methodology alongside examples from studies conducted under his supervision or with his participation. Final reading details will follow when the chapter is available.

Veresov situates this research outside the Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) framework. All readings and discussion will centre on his own texts and research.

Guest presenter

Professor Nikolai Veresov

Professor Nikolai Veresov is a leading scholar in cultural-historical theory, with a particular focus on Vygotsky’s work, developmental method, perezhivanie, drama and the social situation of development. His research has contributed significantly to contemporary discussions of how development should be studied as a dynamic, dramatic and socially situated process. Veresov’s work is especially relevant for questions concerning method in cultural-historical psychology: how to analyse developmental events, crises, contradictions and the formation of new psychological relations in concrete social situations.
